'Had I just entered an endless butterfly farm?' was my first thought upon disembarking the plane at Iguazu airport at the beginning of my trip around Argentina and Chile. Thousands of magnificently coloured butterflies - I knew I was in for something special.

Whilst checking into the Sheraton Hotel, I caught my first glimpse of the impressive falls and eagerly anticipated the opportunity to explore. Boarding the train to Garganta del Diablo (Devils throat falls), a 70 metre deep gorge where several branches of the Iguazu River converge into somewhat violently thundering waterfall, I watched the butterflies flutter in and out of the carriages.

Crossing over numerous boarded passages above the Parana River to the islands, I immediately appreciated just how vast the Iguazu National Park is, covering an estimated area of 550 km² with endless sub topical jungle and fauna. What a truly magical haven! I was extremely lucky to witness the falls in their full splendour following recent heavy rains in Brazil. It was hard to believe that on some occasions the falls almost disappear due to a lack of water.

Onward to Missiones, to find the landscape a vibrant red from the rich content of iron oxide in the earth. Here I spent time with the local Gurani people at Yacutinga Lodge. Considering it was winter in Argentina it was still fairly humid, yet very cool at night when I was grateful for the comfort of my log fire! During my stay at Yacutinga Lodge I undertook several excursions with my guide, Carlos, visiting the Capybara breeding programme and planting a sapling near the Capybara reserve, observing hummingbirds, morpho butterflies and also wildlife during our twilight jungle tour. Following an excellent day, I retreated to my cabin for a well-earned sleep, only to be unexpectedly accompanied by a rather nosey possum for the entire evening.

Leaving Iguazu, I flew back to Buenos Aires to attend the lavish Rojo Tango show at the Faena Hotel, an incredibly slick performance of lively song and dance, complete with excellent food and wine. Onwards to Bariloche, a small alpine-like city situated around Lake Nahuel Huapi in northern Patagonia with snow-capped peaks and an abundance of chocolatieres! From Bariloche I drove to San Martin de los Andes via the stunning seven lakes crossing boasting picturesque views across large lakes including Nahuel Huapi set amidst lush green forests and peaks. Located alongside the shores of Lake Lácar, San Martin de los Andes provides ample opportunities for those seeking adventure and relaxation including horse riding at a local estancia or simply dining in one of its countless brassieres.

My journey continued with a journey winding through the Andes onward to Chile, and around the base of the stunning Lanin Volcano towards Pucon where I observed the immigration officers undertaking their daily 'chore' of table tennis!

I boarded a flight from Valdivia airport to Calama, where I transferred to San Pedro de Atacama, an oasis in the desert.

The following morning I woke at sunrise trying to contain my excitement at being in the driest arid desert in the world. I visited Valle de la Muerte - Death Valley, not really known for this and just mispronounced by a French lady, which was staggering and gave me a true perception of how diverse the Atacama Desert can be in a relatively short distance.

I witnessed the most spectacular sunset I had ever seen or envisaged seeing, a true show of reds, purples, oranges and in amongst this outstanding performance were 4 species of flamingo grazing along the salt flats.

To say I had to pinch myself was a complete understatement. The following morning I rose early to witness the El Tatio geysers spurt steam from the ground in all their grandeur at minus 15 degrees, increasing at the rate of 28 degrees in one hour, thus a dip in the Puritama thermal springs en route back to San Pedro was very welcoming!

During the final stages of my journey I flew back across the Andes to Argentina, to the beautiful vineyards of Mendoza and bodegas that cover a vast area of land at the foot of the Andes. A perfect place to relax at the end my trip.

Mexican Real Estate on the Internet - Keep on Surfing !!

"A piece of paradise for the price of an SUV"  Did that get your attention?
It sure caught mine and the on-line ad was lure enough for me to head down and take a look.  With over 10 years of vacationing in this lovely spot my roots were about to take hold.  The idea of Chemuyil bay with its shallow turquoise water washing the soft white sand backed by the lush green jungle within an 8 minute walking distance from my new beach house sounded to good to be true.  And you know what they say about that - if it sounds to good then it must be.

After many emails to a patient realtor I summoned the courage to make the trip. Not only did I want to see what this internet ad was all about but I also needed a nice warm get away from Saskatchewan's cold blizzardy winter.  Feb. 2008 I booked a last minute flight to Cancun and wasted no time by heading out the following weekend.  Even just the flight was a welcomed change.  I spent the first day unwinding by the hotel pool and walking on the beach until sunset brought out the usual party crowd.  I knew from the internet blog writings that Chemuyil was much relaxed  It took a breezy 1.5 hour drive from Cancun and just 30 minutes past Playa del Carmen to reach Chemuyil, a small Mayan Village with a population of approx. 1000 and very relaxed unlike its metropolitan neighbors.  I took the turn off headed into the little town to the landmark - Leo's Pizza -  to cool off with some beer and pizza. I was searching for a small community called Chan Chemuyil and soon found out it was located 2 minutes down a dirt road.

There are no other signs of economic growth or tourism and the homes are exactly as depicted on the internet. I was pleasantly surprised and very much relieved.  My brother-in-law first sent me the ad to this special community while surfing the internet and I read a realty ad and the story behind the homes.  In 2002 Chan Chemuyil began as a private subdivision of 234 homes built by the Mexican Government to be sold to Mexican people under the stipulations of job tenure, Mexican social security payment for the prescribed job tenure and $60,000 pesos down payment.  These measurements were too high for most nationals and the closest work was 30 minutes away in Playa del Carmen so only 46 homes had sold in the 5 years of the project.  This left most of the homes empty to defend themselves against natures blast of 3 hurricanes over the next 5 years. In the spring of 2007, two business partner / realtors came snooping along Hwy 307 and spotted the road that leads to Chan Chemuyil.

With vision, patience and endurance they were able to strike up a deal with the Mexican Government to acquire the titles to start selling these homes.  Well, the houses survived nature, the realtors survived the final sales and I survived my first foreign home purchase.  The community is already planning its first Christmas party and a Home Owners Association has been formed so I think this community will be a wonderful place to live or visit.  I have found a website that contains Riviera Maya info www.chemuyilproperty.com - visit it today!

This article is about the H1N1 and China travel. You can find some useful information in it if you are planning your China vacations now.

The A(H1N1) quarantine policy (from several big Chinese web sites) in China:

1. If you don't have a fever when getting off the plane in the airports of China, you don't need to worry about quarantine policy of China at all. If you do have a fever, you will need to do a medical examination in the city where you enter China. This is to make sure that you don't get the A(H1N1) flu.( more info about "Travel To China, H1N1,China vacations" at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM )

2. If there is some people having a fever in your plane to China and your seat is very close to him/her (less than 3 meters away), you will need to do the medical examination in the hospital when this people is confirmed as a A(H1N1) flu patient. The Chinese Malaria Control Center will contact you when they find some confirmed A(H1N1) cases in the plane you take. If you sit far away from the A(H1N1) patient (more than 3 meters away) in the plane, you don't need to worry about this issue at all. No one is going to ask you to do a medical examination even when there is some confirmed A(H1N1) cases in your plane to China.

3. Some people did the quarantine for a week in Beijing and Jiangshu when they got to China. They only did this voluntarily. One one is going to ask you to do this. But in my point of view, this can be good both for your family and your friends. You don't wanna your close people to be threatened by the A(H1N1) flu too, right? ( more info about "Travel To China, H1N1,China vacations" at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM )

Some personal experience when people arrived at the airports of Beijing,Shanghai or Hongkong:

1. My parents traveled to China last Monday. All they got in the Beijing Capital Airport is to go through a Temperature Monitoring Device. That's it. When they stayed in the hotel, the Malaria Control Center didn't contact them. Now there are more than 200 A(H1N1) cases in China and the Chinese people don't pay so much attention to this flu as they used to be. (I think it is very natural for the Chinese people to be very nervous about this A(H1N1) flu. The SARS was such a disaster here in the year of 2003. )

2. I flied to China last week and I am in China now. I am not very familar with the A(H1N1) quarantine policy in China. I will only talk about my personal experience here. I entered China in the Shanghai Pudong Airport. In the plane, the airhostesses helped us to do the body temperature check once. When we arrived at Shanghai, some "astronauts" checked our body temperature again. When I left the U.S., my body temperature was about 37 Centigrade. (because I was sleeping poorly these days) But they didn't find me out. Maybe I was not having a fever when they checked my body temperature in the airport. I then transfered to another plane. No one contacted me about the A(H1N1) flu issue any more. I can do whatever I like in China. By the way, I left my address in China and phone number in the Shanghai Pudong Airport of course.

3. I visited Hong Kong last week. All I did is to fill out some forms. No body temperature check at all. When I arrived at Shenzhen, some people asked me to go through the Temperature Monitoring Device and fill out some other forms. ( more info about "Travel To China, H1N1,China vacations" at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM )

By 06/13/2009, there are 293 A(H1N1) flu cases in China. ( Beijing: 38, Guangdong: 37, Fujian: 25, Shanghai: 17, Sicuan: 15, Hubei: 9, Zhejiang: 6, Tianjin: 4, Shandong: 3, Hunan: 2, Henan: 1, Jiangsu: 1, Shanxi: 1, Liaoning: 1, Guizhou: 1, Jiangxi: 1, Hainan: 3, Hongkong: 84, Taiwan: 44 )

Bali is one island of Indonesia which has about 13,000 islands in all. Bali is located just 2 kilometers away from the eastern tip of the Java Island and Lombok Island. The island is home of approximately 4 million people. It is approximately 144 kilometers from east to west and 80 kilometers north to south. There are varied landscapes of hills and mountains, rugged coastlines and sandy beaches, lush rice terraces and barren volcanic hillsides which provide a picturesque backdrop to the colorful and deeply spiritual culture of this 'Island of The Gods'.

The word "paradise" is used a lot in Bali. Eighty percent of international visitors to Indonesia visit Bali or visit Bali specially. The popularity is not without reason. The first Hindus arrived at Bali as early as 100 BC. So it is easy to understand why the island has such a long time to develop its own culture. But the current chapter for Bali's history begins in the seventies when intrepid hippies and surfers discovered Bali's beaches and waves. Tourism soon became the main resource of income. Despite the shocks of the terrorist attacks in 2002 and 2005, the magical island continues to draw crowds. Bali's culture remains as spectacular as ever.

There are an estimated 20,000 temples (pura) on the island, each of which holds festivals (odalan) at least twice a year and there are many other auspicious days throughout the year.  There are always festivities going on. There are some large festivals that are celebrated island wide, but their dates are determined by two local calendars. The 210-day wuku or Pawukon calendar is completely out of sync with the Western calendar while the lunar saka (caka) calendar roughly follows the Western year.
