Cartago is one of the seven provinces that constitute Costa Rica. Situated on the Atlantic side of the continental divide, the Cartago region stretches between the Reventazón River valley and the surrounding Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes to the north and Cerro de la Muerte and Mount Chirripó to the south.

Founded in 1563 by Juan Vasquez de Coronado, Cartago was the first Spanish settlement in Costa Rica. Cartago was the capital of Costa Rica until 1823 but had to go forgo this privilege to San José because of its proximity with the Irazu Volcano that nearly destroyed the city in 1723.

Visit Cartago and take a step back in time as you see the 16th century ruins that provide an interesting insight into the rich history and culture of the pre-Columbian inhabitants. The lush green vegetation that characterized the region was later cleared by the Spanish settlers who made the Cartago region their home. The picturesque villages in the Cartago region stand testimony to an era gone by.

Cartago has much to offer the visitors, who come to experience its amazing past, explore its historical monuments, or marvel its natural attractions.

Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles: This impressive Byzantine style basilica is dedicated to Virgen de los Pardos, officially known as la Virgen de los Ángeles (the Lady of the Angels). The church houses the miraculous La Negrita or Black Madonna, a statue known for its healing powers. It attracts pilgrims from across the world on August 2, the feast day of the Virgin of the Angels.

Irazu Volcano National Park: The National Park is home to the active Irazu Volcano. The highest volcano in Costa Rica, the Irazu volcano has witnessed 23 eruptions since 1723, last being in1963. The major attraction in this park is the lake at Diego de la Haya Crater with its unusual bright greenish and yellow water.

Parque Nacional Chirripó: Located in the south of Cartago, the Parque Nacional Chirripó is Costa Rica’s most famous mountain park. Visitors can climb Cerro Chirripó, Central America’s highest peak, at a height of 12,529 feet. The park is ideal for hiking and trekking and exploring the natural vegetation with its exotic wildlife. The climb is aggressive but rewarding.

Orosi Valley: This scenic Orosi valley lies at about an hour’s drive southeast of San José, just beyond the town of Paraíso. The panoramic vistas en route showcase the best of Cartago’s natural attractions. The town of Orosi houses the country’s oldest church that dates back to the 1700’s. The church, which has survived many earthquakes, features altars and shrines beautifully carved from wood. There are several natural thermal springs in the valley, which are known for their curative powers.

The Ruins: This archaeological site in Cartago contains the ruins of an uncompleted church that was destroyed in the 1910 earthquake. There is a garden with an interesting collection of flowers in the remaining walls. A major landmark of down town Cartago, The Ruins is a good place to relax and observe the local life.

Renowned for being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, the city of New York is a definite must-see. Its electric atmosphere, surpassed only by its range of cultural attractions and sites of interest, makes it a place guaranteed to dazzle your senses and ignite a passion for inner-city exploration. So, if you’re planning to take a trip this year, make sure you head to the Big Apple.

Arguably, the music scene is one of the city’s strongest points. In fact, globally recognised for its musical contributions – the city witnessed the rise of jazz, hip hop and punk, to name but a few influential movements – there can be no better place to indulge your passion for music than by taking advantage of the many concerts, events and performances held around New York.

Combining an enthusiasm for music and dance, the New York International Salsa Congress is a great event to attend. Held over three days, and taking place annually, it has grown to become one of the biggest events of its kind and offers visitors some of the very best in live salsa music. Located in the heart of the city, it is also a good base for exploring Times Square and the Carnegie Hall.

The River to River Festival, which has been running for eight years, is also well worth a visit. Taking place every summer, with events held around the city, there are over 500 performances to attend. Cited as New York’s largest free arts festival, there is a plethora of exciting and diverse concerts to enjoy, in addition to the many live performances and dance events on offer.

If it’s soulful jazz music that you’re after, then why not try one of New York’s unique jazz tours? With guides taking you around the city’s best hotspots, including legendary clubs like Birdland, as well as some of the more intimate hangouts, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Not only that, but you can also sharpen up your jazz knowledge with a running commentary from your guide.

Philharmonic in the Parks, on the other hand, is a great way to enjoy some of the very best in classical music whilst lying under the stars or getting together with your friends. Every year there are a number of free concerts held around the city, meaning you have plenty of opportunity to catch a performance.

There is no doubt that if you have a passion for music, then the Big Apple’s the place to be. In addition to the many annual events, there are also hundreds of one-off concerts and mini music events scheduled throughout the year. And with the competitive range of affordable flights available and New York hotels travelling to New York is becoming remarkably affordable, leaving you with more money to splash on the big apple.

At present, Pelion is a very desirable vacation destination in Greece. This region lying in the centre of Greece is completely a mountainous region and it is located on a peninsula between the Aegean Sea and the Pagasitic Gulf. From nature lovers to good time holiday makers and people who want to retreat into a relaxing vacation away from the noise and crowded areas, Pelion is definitely the right choice. The region’s popularity has urged many hoteliers to open a good Pelion hotel in this region, be it in the quaint mountainous villages or in the picturesque coastal villages. The region is inviting tourists and visitors not only in the summer season but also in the winter season as well. Besides the standard facilities, a lot of other considerations are always taken into account while choosing a Pelion hotel.

Tourists who visit this enigmatic region are always curious to find out a good Pelion hotel in the region. A Pelion hotel, which is not too dramatic and overbearingly stylish but should be well-organized and impeccable in their services, is the most sought after. Some tourists, who bring their family here, always try to see whether the hotel is child friendly or not. Some also find out whether they can search a Pelion hotel that allows pets to stay as well. Such requirements prove to be the prime factors when deciding to choose a Pelion hotel in the region. When a Pelion hotel is constructed in the region, all these matters have to be revised by the makers of the hotel in order to provide a completely hassle-free vacation to the travelers who pay a lot of money to come here and enjoy the numerous touristy aspects of the region.

Each and every Pelion hotel is seeking to promote the beauty of this region. Thus when it comes to rooms, they are always built in such a manner that the view from each room should have the capability to enthrall the guests. The view should be stunning and a balm to the eyes. It must be one of a kind, never seen before type. The Pelion hotel tries to amaze its visitors by giving them nice views to cherish from the balcony or from the large French windows which a certain Pelion hotel might boast of having. The view from the room is very important to the guest. As each day he will be looking at it and get a sense of being rejuvenated. It should have the effect of allowing the visitor to unwind completely and also provide the unique feeling of being close to Mother Nature.

Good excursion facilities are another factor which tourists keep in mind while choosing a hotel. In Pelion, there is plenty to see and learn. Pelion is home to almost 70 villages, all different from one another. Some are located in the mountainous areas whereas some you can find along the vast stretch of coastline. Each of these villages has churches, museums, ancient sites associated with history, myth and legend. There are different types of festivals that go on in these villages all throughout the year. The locals are extremely friendly and they are always enthusiastic to show off the village folk art to the tourists. Many times a Pelion hotel organizes excursion trips for its guests so that they can know about the region and genuinely like the various exclusive cultural aspects inherent of this region.

Words cannot adequately describe the experiences you will have spending a week at The Everglades National Park. You are definitely strangers in a strange land: a very fragile ecosystem for all of Southern Florida and the entire nation. The Everglades has two seasons: wet and dry. This is the dry season, until May or June.

Camp at Lone Pine. The pinelands region is an important ecosystem in the everglades, being the home to many different animals: panthers, bobcats, deer, black bear, raccoons, alligators, and an assortment of snakes, etc. These animals like their privacy. Even though you might not see many during your stay, they most probably were looking at you. What you will see is an abundance of alligators doing what they do best during the day: working on their sun tan. They feed at night and will eat almost anything that moves. Go to one trail at night to see them in action and you will not be disappointed.

One day we actually saw an alligator running through the campgrounds. He/she spotted a dog hanging out the window of a van. The gator, who can reach speeds of thirty-five mph, made a beeline for the dog and hid behind a tree, less than six feet from the van. Luckily for the dog, the owner did not take it for a walk. A week before there was a major confrontation between a twenty-foot Burmese python, an exotic species brought into the park by tourists, and an alligator. The gator had the python’s head in his mouth, while the snake had his coils around the gator. The gator went to the bottom of the pond for twenty-five minutes at a crack to drown the snake. This went on for over twenty-four hours. Turned out to be a stalemate. The male and female pythons have located each other and are raising families (another major problem facing the Park ecosystem). The government is n ow making a major effort to rid the park of the pythons.

Slash pines grow to sixty feet in height with an undergrowth of saw palmetto and sabal (cabbage) palm. Every seven years or so, the undergrowth must be set afire to allow new growth to take place and to avoid allowing the hardwood forest to overtake the unique pine land forest. Among the pine forest are hardwood hammocks, the home of gumbo limbo trees, live oaks, tamarind trees. Many varieties of tree snails, having immigrated from Cuba centuries ago make their homes on these trees, eating the lichen. They come in many different color combinations, besides all white or black. They were prized by collectors in the past and were almost eradicated.

Throughout the Pine lands, are many miles of hiking and biking trails; mostly old logging roads from before the 1940s. The best way to see the area is with a Park Ranger. Even though you might go on the same trail more than once, you see something different each trip and learn more about the various birds, plants and animals.

Thirty-four miles south is Florida Bay and Flamingo Campgrounds. This is the area of the mangrove tree forests and the tropical saltwater ecosystem. Mangroves remind me of the Ents in “The Lord of the Rings” and the pods from “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” They grow standing on their root systems which allows the tides to wash under them. They provide a haven for the small aquatic life from the larger predators. For a long time people thought they were useless, but found that their leaves, when decomposing, provide nourishment for the fish. One thousand pounds of dropped leaves yields over seven thousand pounds of edible fish for human consumption.

Flamingo is the home for many sea birds: pelicans (who fly up to 10,000 feet when migrating), bald eagles, osprey, skimmers, terns, gulls, cormorants, anhingas, hawks, ever present vultures, etcBesides the bird life, there are crocodiles, manatees, and many small rodents and mammals.

There is one downside about Flamingo: INSECTS (TOO MANY MOSQUITOES AND NO-SEE’UMS). Nosee’ums are very small and you do not see them; only feel their bites. The hotter and wetter the weather, the more the insects do their thing: eat and reproduce. The National Park Service offers ranger led canoe trips two and a half hours in length. Take the one on Florida Bay.

The Everglades National Park has so much to offer. The population of wildlife is only about ten percent of what it was thirty years ago. Water management programs have starved the everglades of their needed water and have given it to the ever increasing population of South Florida and to the subsidized sugar cane farmers. These are the primary recipients of the water. The Glades are low on the totem pole. The Everglades are not dead yet, but are very sick. The environmental practices as far north as Orlando have repercussions even to Key West. People definitely need water to survive. But why subsidize the sugar cane industry. It takes more than one thousand gallons of water to grow one pound of sugar. Besides the water usage, they over fertilize the ground, which invites the growth of foreign plants. They also pollute the air with their refineries. You can see the smoke from miles around. Besides killing the Everglades, sugar kills people too. Many rangers feel optimistic about the future, but are still concerned about the priorities of the politicians. Money talks. Who has the money? Developers and corporate agriculture.

There are two other sections to the Everglades. Take The Tamiami Trail West about twenty miles to Shark Valley, another river within the Everglades. Rent a bicycle or take the tram tour around the twenty-three mile loop. At the far end an observation tower gives you a birds-eye view of the park. Watch out for the alligators, who might be sunning themselves on the trail.

Further down in Everglades City is the tour of the 10,000 islands branch of the Everglades. No there are not 10,000 islands; more like 13,000 islands. They are continually built by the mangroves which take root in the shallow waters and grow. The mangrove groves are the nurseries to much of the fish living in the oceans. They are a boon to our ecosystem.

Edinburgh may be Scotland’s culture capital, but it’s undoubted that Glasgow’s social scene is rivalled not even by the big city itself. Glasgow, a large city around an hour’s journey to the west of Edinburgh, is well known for its reputation as a party city and, if you’re looking to discover some great nights out, you’ll soon find out why.

Cherished as a city that welcomes all, Glasgow has everything you could want for a fantastic social experience, from the friendliest locals to a thrumming dance and music scene. Whatever your style, you’ll find it in Glasgow. From the best up and coming local rock acts to international jazz stars playing one off shows, the city plays host to myriad events every night of the year. With dance acts from ballet to street performers lighting up the stretching main walkways and sopranos filling the air of the Royal Concert Hall to hardened heroes of rock crooning to dingy basement clubs, Glasgow is a city with a lot to offer any style.

You’ll also find a rich gastronomic culture in the city too, with a wealth of fantastic restaurants inviting hungry customers to sample the delights of the best local, national and international cuisine. Alternatively, if it’s a simple takeaway you’re after, Glasgow won’t disappoint. What’s more, a stunning array of bars and pubs are waiting to be explored, with watering holes coming in all shapes and forms from quaint, old fashioned alehouses to cutting edge establishments.

Sports fans can watch their favourite team in a number of specialist sports bars, while those looking for a relaxed meal can pop in to one of many bars that serve meals.

As for clubs, Glasgow yet again excels. Whatever style of clubbing experience you prefer, be it the smooth beats of a hip hop night, the thrumming tunes of a trance club or the head-banging, crowd-surfing hits of a rock venue, you’ll be able to find the perfect clubs to suit your tastes.

During the day, the city offers tremendous shopping and cultural experiences, but it’s at night that the city truly shines. That’s why so many people choose flights to Glasgow when they’re thinking about heading on a party holiday. Many revellers bring their friends to the ‘Weedge’ as its often locally known, on a night out on the town for a stag night, a hen party, a birthday party or just for the sake of it – the city caters to all styles and you’re bound to have a great time, no matter what you do.

As the summer wind blows in the Fall months, I am reminded of old Charlie Brown classics where Lucy holds the football as poor Charlie Brown tries, in great vain, to kick it. You would think that after 50+ years of falling flat on his back, ol’ Charlie would have known better. Good news for the rest of us, a great big ball is in plain site of us, and it has taken the shape of travel bargains. So, in case you’re tired of taking the long way home; take a gander at some places to go this Fall season:

Paris. What can you say about the ‘La Ville-Lumière’-which translates literally, to “The Light City”? It’s true, if there are questions that are bothering you’re soul, this very well could be the place to find the answers. The first time that I went to Paris, albeit kicking and screaming, it touched my heart; as it does most romantics. The smell of the French kitchens and the erotic sounds of the language are a brilliant combination to make this a great part of your vacation recipe. Caribbean. Its hard to go wrong with places like Jamaica, Aruba or any of the hundreds of other islands that populate this wide range of salty pieces of land. If you haven’t been keeping up with the travel bug that has been going around, and forgot to renew your passport, the USVI lets you slip by without needing one; regarding you’re an American citizen. Family style vacations or a way to rekindle your romance is what the Caribbean can do for you.

Any place in the USA – not named Hawaii. How about this land of ours, huh? Thanks to this gigantic melting pot of cultures, the US of A has great vacation spots anywhere and everywhere you look. Think I’m pulling your chain? Set your GPS to the great Pacific Northwest; where driving along the coasts of Oregon and California eliminates any stereotype that you may have that the US is not known for a travel destination. Not only is it one of the most scenic drives anywhere, you can indulge in some of the world’s finest wines. The Northeast brings with it the history of this great country. History buff or not, there is a lot of really cool stuff in places like Boston and Philadelphia. Of course, Florida and Las Vegas are also here!

Cruising. I thought about whether or not to put this on this list, but really how can you not? Think about what you have when you board one of these enormous vessels. All the food that you can stand, entertainment, activities and every where you look…water! I have done a little independent survey with the help of a few friends and asked them what their favorite vacation spot would be; and without fail, it was someplace that featured some kind of water themed retreat. I’m a bit of a rookie when it comes to this, as I only been on 4 cruises and they were all to the Caribbean; but each time I caught myself thinking about the same thing; the ocean + a margarita = the perfect vacation!

Canada. Did I really say that? Its true, our neighbors to the north do offer some great fall escapes. My personal favorite, Montreal, offers a very mild taste of European zest. They don’t over due it, but you can tell the influence does reside there. I have been to Montreal about 20 times in my life and any snow withdrawals that I may have suffered from are well taken care of. Overdue snow ball fights were at a premium when I last visited there. Although the temps were frigid, it was made a little more bearable thanks to the many friendly people that call that place home. Bring a few sweaters with you if you’re not too familiar with the cold temperatures that this city tends to blow in.

Ornamental accessories, golden tapering headdresses, glamorous vibrant costumes and the graceful movement of a group of performers define the attributes of Thai traditional dancing.

There are 2 main types of Thai dances, namely Classical Dance and Folk Dance. A sub genre encompasses all regional dances performed for various seasons and festivals originating from the regions North, Northeast, South and Central. Most of the traditional dances are based on epics and folklore. Hence they are called dance dramas and are performed usually by a group of dancers. These dancers fascinatingly mime to the chorus harmonised from backstage.

Classical dance forms still retain their original splendour since they are strictly traditional and not innovative. Incorporating 108 basic movements, the dancers need to perform while keeping their upper body upright. They can use their knees to bend and stretch, synchronizing with the traditional music. The hand and finger movements are complex yet alluring and together with ornate costumes dazzling under the spotlights, their performances become truly spellbinding.

The highest form of Classical dance drama of Thailand is called Khon. This regal performance is presented by dancers dressed in multicoloured handworked costumes wearing ornamental gold headdresses and masks. Khon dance drama is based on the Ramakien, a Thai national story derived from the famous Indian epic Ramayana. These were written and revised during the era of the Thai kings Rama I and Rama II.

The next high form of classical dance style Lakhon is mainly performed by female dancers and they are based on folklore as well as Jataka tales, and the Indian literature encompassing the previous births of the Buddha.

Likay, Ram Muay and Wai Khru are some of the folk dance styles of Thailand. These styles are characterised by comedy and subtle performances, where costumes can be either contemporary or traditional. The popular Muay Thai, a type of Thai martial arts, is derived from Ram Muay dance style. Some of these folk dances have evolved with time and are influenced and enriched by different cultures and dance forms.

During the ancient times the highest classical dance forms were presented only for the royalties and high officials. At present there are many theatres, cultural centres and hotels in Bangkok and other cities of the country hosting Thai traditional dances for entertainment of the masses. Travellers can find cosy Bangkok hotel accommodation such as Bangkok President Solitaire an ideal Bangkok Sukhumvit hotel that is great to spend a vacation in the city. They can also discover the glamour and elegance of Thai culture and traditions through Thai traditional dances.

The impressive Sun Yat-Sen Park has become a must visit place for those touring Macau. It is beautifully situated towards the northwest part of the country and covers a total land area of approximately 70,000 square metres. It is known to be the largest urban park in Macau and is 390 metres long and about 130 metres wide.

Initially known as Canal Dos Patos Park this beautiful creation first opened its doors to the public 1987. It was a created to honour the bond between the Chinese and the Portuguese. Few years later in 1990, a life size statue of China’s ‘Father of the Revolution’, Doctor Sun Yat-sen was put in place at the park. It was in the honour of Doctor Sun Yat-sen that the park was renamed to Sun Yat-Sen Park.

This recreational park is separated in to two main areas and each area depicts a unique style. The northeast part of the park is created according to a typical classical Chinese design complete with manmade lakes, pavilions and a bridge. However, the southwestern part of the park is totally different in style since it features typical European style garden planning. For instance, this section of the park comes with greenhouses, lawns and even facilities for athletics. In the heart of the Sun Yat-Sen Park visitors will find a children’s playground.

Two most prominent aspects of the park include the steel statues that are shown shaking hands in the heart of the park, which stands as a memory of the age old friendship between the Portuguese and the Chinese. The other most outstanding feature is the Huang Junying Public Library which is extremely useful for both adults and children. Other facilities at the park include a swimming pool, grassed areas ideal for relaxing and for play, an amphitheatre as well as Pelotas courts.

As a fine hotel in Macau which is located in close proximity to Sun Yat-Sen Park, The Venetian Macau Resort Hotel provides guests with convenient access to this exceptional site as well as other exciting venues throughout the peninsula. Therefore, travelers can easily board in a luxury hotel Macau such as The Venetian Macau Resort Hotel and experience state of the art facilities and explore some fascinating tourist attractions at the same time.

Alvin Starkman, M.A., LL.B.

Comic strips, a young Canadian’s self portraits, and photographs of violent deaths in a Mexican daily newspaper, make strange bedfellows. But they constitute a major part of the driving force for the creative energies of artist Fiona Dunnett, a resident of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Ottawa-born Dunnett has been living in Oaxaca since 2005. As in the case of so many artists who now reside in this city in southern Mexico, her arrival has been rather circuitous. And like so many others, her artistic talent has been influenced at virtually every stop along the way. At age five she left Canada for Bangladesh with her Canadian diplomat mother and the rest of her family. After three years it was back to Ottawa, and then a further three years in Zimbabwe.

“When I left Zimbabwe I felt close to South Africa. I took a course in stone sculpture while there, so yes, I suppose living in Zimbabwe has had somewhat of an influence on what I do today,” she surmises. But it was her upper level academic training, first at the Canterbury School of Arts, followed by British Columbia’s University of Victoria from which she graduated with an Hons. B.A. in Fine Arts, which exposed her to the personages who have impacted her creativity the most.

“I’ve had a strong interest in the work of Gustav Klimt [1862 – 1918],” Dunnett reveals. The Austrian symbolist painter was one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Art Nouveau movement, yet a controversial figure in his time, criticized for his works being too sensual and erotic. She continues: “But it’s Lichtenstein whose art I’ve actually made more of a conscious effort to respect and carry forward, imprinting it with a bit of my own personality and life experiences.”

Roy Fox Lichtenstein [1923 – 1997] was a prominent American pop artist, whose work was heavily influenced by both popular advertising and the comic book style. The latter clearly shines through in Dunnett’s more recent works, and in an earlier piece which graces a wall in her home in Oaxaca’s Xochimilco neighborhood which she shares with her boyfriend and three others: “That one’s based on a dream I had, certainly with overt comic book imagery; in the particular dream there was a calenda (parade), with bodies being dragged through the streets. I once did a series based on my dreams. I dyed the red sky forming part of the background of this canvas with cochineal [the minute insect with naturally produces carminic acid, and was an important export industry for Oaxaca during colonial times].”

Dunnett is much too modest. Since moving to Oaxaca there’s no doubt that she’s put her own mark on the comic style, with her un-daunting desire to learn, and innovate. The geographical, cultural and political environment in which she lives provides her with diverse opportunities for artistic inspiration. She attended a workshop to learn about the use of natural dyes such as flowers, plants and of course cochineal, at the educational and research facility known as Centro de Difusión de la Grana Cochinilla Tlapanochestli. “For quite some time I’d been thinking about using natural dyes in my work, but it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I realized that here in Oaxaca [actually a few kilometers out of the city, in Santa María Coyotepec] I had the opportunity to learn about their use from an expert, Manuel Loera Fernández, the chemist at Tlapanochestli. There’s just so much artistic stimulation in Oaxaca that it’s hard to resist taking advantage of everything available.”

Dunnett has also participated in more traditional hands-on seminars, at the well-known Graphic Arts Institute of Oaxaca (IAGO) and at a couple of other institutes in the city. Towards the other end of the spectrum, she credits two local graffiti stencil art groups with providing her with additional inspiration, which becomes apparent after an examination of her work.

“I began moving out of realism and into stylized, surreal works towards the end of my Canadian academic training. It was about the same time that I began working with mixed media, my strong preference at this stage of my development.” Coming to Oaxaca was perhaps the catalyst she required in order to begin more experimental work, within the context of an extremely encouraging environment.

Aside from a leaning towards the use of natural colors for backgrounds on her canvasses, one of the major identifying features of Dunnett’s work is her use of collage — cut-outs from newspapers, magazines and comic books. Another is using photographs of her own head and face to provide the stimulus for her portrayal of expressions and poses she seeks to capture for each subject. Almost every head in every work is based on a self-photographic portrait:

“I started doing self-portraits when I began doing photography several years ago. Then when I moved into painting, I had this corpus of self-photos, so I was able to draw from them for my art. Although I wanted to shoot other people, I never felt at ease doing so. And though my boyfriend and I have been together for close to four years, I still don’t feel comfortable photographing even him. So it’s all me, perhaps because of being shy when it comes to shooting others. But that red one over there, textured with corn husks from tamales, it’s an experiment, using a face that’s not my own — I think it’s best if I stick to my own face.”

Each face evokes different emotions, and images of self. “The faces make eye contact; viewers’ eyes move around each work and then return to the eyes and face,” she explains. It’s undeniable that Dunnett’s own pleasing facial features, and her comport, once transferred to canvas, play a significant role in directing the viewer. She has masterfully photographed her head and upper body at every angle and with a plethora of facial expressions for use in her work.

But there’s another reason we return to the images of Dunnett’s facial expressions: The torso and limbs of each primary subject portrayed is far too troubling — each is a digitalized version of a photograph of a person who has died a violent death, usually in a traffic collision or as a consequence of domestic conflict, captured by Dunnett from both print and online versions of a Oaxacan daily, Noticias Voz e Imagen de Oaxaca. But in the artist herself, there is a sense of calm.

“I started using those photographs because they just began to jump out at me. You never see anything like it in Canada. In Oaxaca, it’s on the street corners and in the newsstands. Death here seems to be an everyday thing, and attitudes towards death are so different than from where you and I come from, not so hidden away.”

Dunnett stresses that her intention is not to invoke feelings of horror, nor reveal the gruesome. The facial expressions she initially captures with a lens, then transposes onto canvas with brush, lead us away. In the case of her work with a collaged iguana, it’s curiosity in her face, rather than demonic imagery of death, which draws one in.

The juxtaposition of death against the aesthetics of comic imagery is striking, almost as much as the multiplicity of presentations of Dunnett’s own self. It’s that combination which maintains the viewer’s awe of and transfixation upon her work. Perhaps Fiona Dunnett never should break out of her reticence about photographing the faces of others.

This article is about the Mount Huang travel, China travel guide, China vacations and China travel tips. You can find some useful information in it if you are planning your Mount Huang,China travel now.

Mount Huang was formed approximately 100 million years ago and gained its unique rock formations in the Quaternary Glaciation.

During the Qin Dynasty, Mount Huang was known as Yishan (Mount Yi). In 747 AD, its name was changed to Huangshan (Mount Huang) by imperial decree; the name is commonly thought to have been coined in honor of Huang Di (the Yellow Emperor), a legendary Chinese emperor and the mythological ancestor of the Han Chinese; one legend states that Mount Huang was the location from which the Yellow Emperor ascended to Heaven. Another legend states that the Yellow Emperor “cultivated moral character and refined pills of immortality in the mountains, and in so doing gave the mountains his name. The first use of this name “Mount Huang” is often attributed to Chinese poet Li Bai. Mount Huang was fairly inaccessible and little-known in ancient times, but its change of name in 747 AD seems to have brought the area more attention; from then on, the area was visited frequently and many temples were built there.

Mount Huang is known for its stone steps, carved into the side of the mountain, of which there may be more than 60,000 throughout the area. The date at which work on the steps began is unknown, but they have been said to be over 1,500 years old.( More info about China travel guide, China vacations, China travel tips at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot Com )

In 1982, Mount Huang was declared a “site of scenic beauty and historic interest” by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 for its scenery and for its role as a habitat for rare and threatened species. The nearby villages of Hongcun and Xidi were also named part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

How to get to Mount Huang(Mount Huangshan) from Beijing?

You can have 3 options: air, train or car.

The plane is the most convinient way of course. It is only about 2 hours trip from Beijing to Mount Huangshan. Currently, the China Air have airlines connecting Beijing with Mount Huangshan. It is available every day and the cost is about 1070 rmb. Sometimes you can get a 30% or 40% off, depending on the time you visit Mount Huangshan. Here is some info about this CA airline: (1). Beijing – Huangshan, Airline Number: CA1551, Take off time: 18:35, Arrive time: 20:47, Plane type: B737, Airfare: 1090 rmb. (2). Huangshan – Beijing, Airline Number: CA1552, Take off time: 21:25, Arrive time: 23:35, Plane type: B737, Airfare: 1090 rmb.

If you wanna take the train from Beijing to Mount Huangshan, the cost is lower than the air. The K45/K46(Beijing-Fuzhou) train can take you to Mount Huangshan. The trip is about 20 hours. Here is some info about this train: (1). Beijing to Huangshan, Train number: K45, Depart: 11:45, Arrive: 07:35, Cost: 182-521 rmb. (2). Huangshan to Beijing, Train number: K46, Depart: 09:21, Arrive: 05:07, Cost: 182-521 rmb.( More info about China travel guide, China vacations, China travel tips at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot Com )

Another option is to drive your own car from Beijing to Mount Huangshan. More and more people like this kind of travel now. I will recommend this tour: Beijing – Nanjing – Maanshan – Wuhu- Jinxian – Mount Huangshan. Some Huangshan,China travel tips here: (1). This trip is about 3300 kilometers and the cost is about 1600 rmb (1100 for the high way fees and 500 for the gas). (2). Sometimes the climate is not so good in south China and this may cause some extra time in your way from Beijing to Mount Huangshan. (like high way closed because of the fog, etc) (3). You will need to bring some food and water in your car. (4). If you are running out of gas, the best choices are the gas stations in the big cities or high way service areas.( More info about China travel guide, China vacations, China travel tips at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot Com )

Anyone who loves art and culture is sure to love making their way through Manchester and its countless offerings. After all, the city is brimming with cultural attractions – from museum and art exhibits, to theatre and music performances.

If you’re a fan of museums, head to Manchester’s independent city centre gallery, Cube – offering an intriguing display of the city’s architectural history. Or, visit the Manchester Museum – a particularly good museum to take children to. The Manchester Museum is home to over 6 million specimens and objects, ranging from a skeleton of a whale, to a 200 million-year-old tree fossil. It also offers hands-on opportunities for kids and adults alike, such as reconstructing dinosaur skeletons, or examining ancient mummies.

Another highlight includes the MoSI (Museum of Science and Industry), which is based in the oldest passenger railway building in the world. Aside from its fascinating setting, the MoSI features exhibitions, hands-on galleries, and historic working machinery for guests to marvel at.

Those who appreciate art shouldn’t miss the galleries at The Lowry. Housing around 350 works by LS Lowry, the galleries shift exhibits regularly to display various genres of art. The Urbis – a gallery dedicated to urban life – is another must-see, exploring some of the world’s greatest cities – including, of course, Manchester. The Touchstones Arts and Heritage Centre, Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery and Gallery Oldham are also big draws for art enthusiasts, with the latter also offering a mix of family events, adult arts and crafts courses, and live music programmes.

Finally, Manchester’s lively performance art scene offers up spectacular drama, dance, comedy and musical performances. The Library Theatre Company is among the most popular theatre companies in the city, while the Opera House is one of the bigger venues hosting performance events. The Royal Exchange Theatre offers up something a little different, as it was once at the centre of the world’s cotton trade. Of course, there are countless other venues that host performances – most of which you can find out about either online or through a Manchester city guide.

If you’re thinking of heading to Manchester before summer is officially over, you’ll want to look into flights and Manchester hotels as soon as possible. Summer is the busiest time for tourists in the city, so the sooner you make your bookings, the better. Tourist numbers should go down immediately following summer, but will go back up once the winter holidays start approaching.

Paris is world-renowned for many things – from iconic sights such as the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, to world-class museums and galleries such as the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay. Yet there are also many lesser-known gems and seasonal attractions to discover in Paris. Make Paris your next holiday destination, and see this fabulous city of culture in a whole other light.

One of the best ways to experience Paris in a unique way is to attend the city’s seasonal or visiting attractions. This could entail anything from concerts and music festivals, to visiting art exhibits and theatre shows. There are countless online resources dedicated to providing information on what’s going on in the city at any given time. So if you think you know when you want to travel to Paris, start researching potential activities. Or, if your travel dates are flexible, you might want to see what’s on before you book any travel – you might just find an attraction that’s worth basing your travel dates around.

Seasonal attractions aside, every city has its hidden or lesser-known treasures – and Paris is certainly no exception. The “City of Lights” – while very much in the limelight – has much to offer travellers seeking such gems. However, you might not always find out about such spots in mainstream guidebooks – which often focus on the bigger, more popular sights and activities.

If you want to see Paris “off the beaten track”, a good way to go about doing so is to ask the locals. You can do this once you arrive in Paris – perhaps after meeting a few locals at a coffee shop – or simply ask your hotel staff, explaining that you want to visit places that are less touristy and more popular with locals. You might also find guidebooks which specialise in steering travellers towards lesser-known spots – so it’s worth asking your local book shop or travel store if they supply any such books.

Of course, if it’s your first time in Paris, you’ll still want to see the main attractions and sights. Paris is a great city to walk around in – so you could always join an organised walking tour, or create a self-guided tour based on suggestions from a guide book. Another great – and less conventional – way to see Paris is by bike. Rent one from a city bike shop, or join a local cycling tour that’s bound to have you wheeling past some of the city’s most beautiful spots.

If you’re thinking of travelling to Paris, the first arrangements you’ll want to make are for your flights and Paris hotels. Your sources for travel deals are plentiful – from tour operators and airlines to hotel companies and general travel service providers. Just remember that there are always bargains to be found – so shop around for the best deal before purchasing your flights or booking your hotel.

With a bit of research on travel activities – as well as flight and Paris hotel options – you’re bound to enjoy a truly memorable getaway in Paris.

When you are reading over a list of Port Macquarie hotels, attempting to make up your mind just where you want to stay, you should always keep in mind the venues and attractions in which you are most interested. If your accommodations are located in a central location, you will find it much easier to see all of the sights that are most popular with visitors to Port Macquarie.

Boorganna Nature Reserve, the second oldest nature reserve in all of New South Wales is one of those sights. You will carry the memories of the wonders of nature revealed to you here for a very long time. The Boorganna Nature Reserve joined the Preservation of Native Flora and Public Recreation in 1904. In 1954, it was named the second faunal reserve in New South Wales. The name Boorganna Nature Reserve was given to this area in 1967

Boorganna Nature Reserve is located on the edge of the beautiful Comboyne Plateau, and very close to the Comboyne village. Comboyne is a derivative of the word Komboi, which means “the place of kangaroos”. These delightful animals call this spectacular landscape their home, and you may be lucky enough to see some of them in their natural habitat even before you enter the nature reserve.

What makes the Boorganna Nature Reserve special? It is around 400 hectares of what remains of the once widespread rainforest of Comboyne. The soil in the reserve is full of volcanic ash, which helps to explain the lush, verdant plants and trees that grow here. However, there is more here than just a rainforest. There are actually six types of rainforests in the Boorganna Nature Reserve. They are the sub-tropical rainforest, the gully rainforest, the warm temperate rainforest, the dry rainforest, and the wet and the dry sclerophyll rainforests.

The terrain is anything but flat in the Boorganna Nature Reserve. The slopes are quite steep, and they gradually even out somewhat in the form of a gully. This gully leads to Mumford’s Creek. The creek flows into the Ellenborough River. Rawson Falls is the breathtaking waterfall of the reserve. Erosion caused a plunge pool to form, which then made this waterfall possible. There is a viewing platform over Rawson Falls where you can admire the view.

There are 36 different bird species in the Boorganna Nature Reserve. You can also see a wide variety of other animals native to Australia in the reserve. There are tree frogs, water dragons, skinks, opossum, foxes, deer, goats and many more different species. While walking through the reserve, see if you can locate all of the 36 different types of ferns that are here!

The Boorganna Nature Reserve is popular for those who enjoy bird watching, bushwalking, and nature photography. A walking trail that leads to the gorge at Rawson Falls, and there is a picnic area on the Eastern side of the Reserve as well as public toilets for your comfort and convenience. Interpretation signs line the Boorganna walking trails. These help visitors to learn and understand more about the area of rainforest they happen to be in at that moment. This lovely area that is full of nature’s best is a must see for anyone who visits Port Macquarie NSW.

As the capital of Peru, it’s obvious that Lima has plenty to offer. Whether you’re a culture vulture that adores taking in ancient Peruvian artefacts in dusty museums or a night owl looking to hit the city’s hottest night spots, you’re guaranteed an excellent vacation in Lima.

Lima has a powerful tourist industry that grew based around the city’s plethora of attractions, such as its museums, art galleries, historical and archaeological sites. There is also a wealth of annual festivals that take place in Lima, where tourists of all types congregate with locals to celebrate a variety of fun and carnivalesque events.

One particularly popular tourist attraction is Lima’s majestic assortment of churches. From the Cathedral of Lima to the Monastery of San Francisco, you can find a crowded collection of churches in and around the city centre, many dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Some of these buildings are home to astounding paintings and wall murals, as well as gorgeous antique furniture and stained glass artworks. Many tourists like to take a day trip around Lima’s churches to get a feel for the city’s development through the ages of the religious life.

Of course, a great way to find out about the history of Lima is to visit any one of its fascinating museums. The Museo Nacional de Arqueología Antropología e Historia del Perú is probably one of the most famous Lima museums, as well as the Museum of Natural History, both of which are well worth a visit of at least several hours each. There are also plenty of art galleries that allow you to get a flavour of local art from Lima and around Peru as it has progressed through history.

Museums and galleries aren’t for everyone, however – and there’s still plenty to do in Lima other than visit these fascinating attractions. For example, if you’re into tasting the local cuisine of a new culture, Peru offers up plenty of opportunities for gastronomic experimentation as Peruvian cuisine is generally considered to be some of the best in the world. There is no style more diverse than Peruvian dishes as they are comprised from fusions between traditional Andean cuisine as well as European and Asian styles – resulting in a completely new style of cooking.

There are also plenty of opportunities to try out in Lima’s bars. Here, you’ll be able to sample local beers and wines to get a true flavour of Peru’s drinking culture.

In any case, as soon as you step off your flight to Lima you’re guaranteed to be greeted by a wealth of things to see to do in this majestic city – so hopefully you plan before you go so you won’t miss out!

Bangkok’s go go bars for men are the stuff that dreams are made of. It’s where you can easily find booze at really affordable prices as well as the company of beautiful women. Read on to find out where to find the most popular go go bars and which hotels you should take your lady of the night for some action.

There are 3 red light districts with go go bars: Patpong, Nana and Soi Cowboy. It’s best to stay in a guest friendly hotel near the red light districts. The reason is guest friendly hotels won’t charge you a joiner fee for bringing a bar girl back to your room. Don’t worry, guest friendly hotels are clean – matter of fact some of them are the most popular hotels in Bangkok.

Patpong Red Light District

Patpong is the birthplace of Bangkok’s go go bar culture. Some of the most popular go go bars in Patpong belong to the King’s Castle and Queen’s Castle entertainment group. King’s Castle has 3 go go bars. Be aware that King’s Castle 3 have all transvestites working inside, while the others have a small number mixed in with real ladies. Best to ask the Mamasan to figure out which is which.

Nana Red Light District

This areas claim to fame is Nana Entertainment Plaza. The entrance is on Nana Soi 4, right across from the Nana Hotel and its parking lot (a popular place to pick up freelance prostitutes). NEP is a small 3 floor building with an open courtyard in the center filled with bars. Surrounding these bars are popular go go bars like Hollywood, Rainbows and Angel Witch. There’s a big lady boy scene here too and you’ll find them at Obsessions and Cascades.

Soi Cowboy Red Light District

Located in the pricey neighborhood of Sukhumvit, Soi Cowboy is the choice of expats in Thailand. Having recently renovated the neon lights are once again glowing brighter and its popularity is reviving after a long dry spell. Soi Cowboy is where you’ll find Long Gun, Rawhide and Cowboys, just a few of the long standing go go bars that pack a large crowd every night. My personal favorite however, is Spice Girls. Many of Soi Cowboy’s go go bars have happy hour drink specials. So it’s a great place to start the night out with a bang.

If you ever want to take a bar girl back to your hotel for an overnight sex romp you first have to negotiate with her on the price. Usually for overnight or “long time” is about 3000THB to 5000THB depending on your bargaining skills and even on how she feels. After you’ve settled on a price you will then have to pay a bar fine, 500THB to bar management, and only then can she be off with you.

For more information visit Bangkok Guest Friendly Hotels for a list of hotels that don’t charge joiner fees. You’ll also find helpful links with information about Bangkok’s sex districts.</p

Jim Hunt is an expat in Thailand. Through the dozen years he’s been living there he has become the unofficial welcoming mat to visiting friends from all over the world. He is also a writer and contributor to http://www.bangkokguestfriendlyhotels.com

Venice is a famous water city of Italy. It is famous for the St. Mark Plaza, the famous person Marco Polo and so on. The water tells people the flourishing also the declining history for one thousand and five hundred of this city. The water city of Venice is unique all over the world. However, people want to know very much why it is on the sea that people built the city? It is said that in the fifth century, the residents who live near the sea escape to live in some small islands and swamplands by sea in order to dodge the invasion of nomadic people in Asia. This is the inchoation of Venice. Venice is built on one hundred and twenty islands. The entire city is communicated by four hundred stone bridges. Venice is the most powerful of all and is a big commerce country in middle ages. So it accumulates a great deal of wealth. It is the gateway from the west to the east. Also, this city is the bridgehead from the east to the west. All the things are relative with water.

We get to the city district by boat. The first impression which Venice leaves us is seen above the water. The blue sky is with blue sea. The city like a palace is sitting up on the sea. There are a lot of river ways in length and breadth as well as many back streets and alleyways in Venice. Thus it is easy to get lost in Venice. We go across the St. Mark Plaza and then take the gondola to have a walk on the water to enjoy the beauty of the city on water.

“Gondola” is one of the features in Venice. It is said that it is made of mesa strictly and daintily with being daubed black lacquer for seven times. Each is eleven meters in length and one point five meters in width. The houses on both sides are in great vigor and obviously old. One or two houses are old and wore. Small stone bridges fly to us head-on now and again. The scene of daily life of ancient Venice dimly emerges. After a short while, the boat sails into the wide canal. The sight changes overnight. Here is the city center of Venice. The palace-like buildings on both sides are row upon row.

Fabulous beaches and beautiful resorts make a Dominican Republic vacation one of the most popular in the Caribbean.

This nation that shares the island of Hispaniola with the country of Haiti claims more than 1,000 miles of beaches. Vacationers will find that the sand is as white as any and that the cooling, swaying palm trees are plentiful.

The nation is large enough — and the beaches are common enough — that vacationers will have a number of options for where they might stay.

Punta Cana in the east and Puerto Plata in the north are two of the most popular resort locations. Cabarete and Playa Dorada also are located in the north. The capital city of Santo Domingo is another popular destination on the southern coast of the country.

All of the major destinations are easily accessible by air, with major airports located at Santo Domingo, Punta Cana and Puerto Plata.

Several of the most popular locations are situated in somewhat remote areas, such as Punta Cana. As a result, there is a heavy emphasis on all-inclusive resorts with extensive facilities and activities all located on the property.

Typical amenities include all food, beverages, entertainment, classes and scheduled activities, certain water sports and more. Some additional activities require an extra fee.

Anyone wanting to spend time off the property will find that Dominican Republic attractions include historical sites, visiting Santo Domingo and taking advantage of ecotourism activities such as whitewater rafting, climbing waterfalls and going on hikes in the national parks.

Anyone planning a vacation in Dominican Republic should know that the nation experiences severe weather during the annual Caribbean hurricane season. Rain is especially heavy from September through November; there is a brief rainy season in May as well, although rainfall tends to be heavier in the interior.

In an effort to create a lasting impact from your photo, leaving the impressions on viewer’s minds, it should have something that keeps him glued. You can employ Adobe PhotoShop’s special effects tools in the menu to add a lightning effect. You can double your exposures or do whatever you choose. The advantage of owning Adobe Photoshop is the rewards it will bring. In fact, I used this program to design my book covers, make commercials, advertising slicks and more, so sit back and enjoy this basic photography course. Lightning Effect: You can use various types of lightning effects and of different colors, applying them to an image using Adobe Photoshop. This will enhance your basic photography skills tremendously. Note that these tips are perfect for newbies as everything is explained in basic photography terms.

How to do it:-

We’ll follow a stepwise manner in doing this: 1Open your editor or Adobe Photoshop program 2Now open the desired image (make sure you open it in RGB format) 3Now from the filter menu choose Renderer and then select your desired lighting effects. 4You will see the lighting effect dialogue box opens up 1.Choose the desired lighting style from the topmost selection menu; you will notice the options style of lights. 2.Choose the light type and move the sliders to set the intensity and focus. 3.You can also change the properties by toggling the sliders for glass, material, exposure, and ambience. 4.You can also change the color of light. To change the color of light just click on the boxes to the right of the light type and properties. This will open the color, picker dialogue box. Choose a color and press ok. 5.To change the direction or placement of light just drag any of the points on the outside ellipse or center point. Click ok after you have adjusted the direction and placement of light. How about that for a basic photography lesson!

Creating Double Exposure effect is one of the best basic photography tips: A double exposure image is created by overlaying two images on one another.

Like above we’ll again follow a stepwise procedure: 1.Select all or a part of the image using the selection tools at the top of the toolbar. 2.Now from the edit menu choose copy. 3.Now open a second image file. 4.From the window menu, you can select the show layer. 5.On the ‘show layer’ popup right click and choose new layer and press ok. 6.Now go to the edit menu and press paste. 7.From the layer’s palette, move the opacity slider to 50%. 8.Now drag the mouse from inside the selection to move it. 9.To scale the pasted selection, click on image menu and then select image size. Adjust the size by adjusting the pixels and height from the pop-up window.

The editing programs today can do wonders to images. One of the most popular programs is Adobe PhotoShop, since this editing program is one of the most sophisticated tools. Most pro photographers will use this program, since you can create web sites, book covers, images, movies, and more. Adobe is also used to design manuals, graphics, commercials, fliers, and more. This particular program I miss. I lost my copy during a severe virus attack, and the downside is it costs around $1000 to $1500 to replace.

Outside of lightning effects, you can also setup brick backgrounds, or whatever background you choose. If you own this program you know what I am talking about, however if you have never had the experience and can get the opportunity to try out Adobe I promise you will have loads of fun. For additional editing assistance check out your menus, Help tools.

I don’t know whether or not you have considered not only a vacation in South Africa, or even got as far as the planning stage. For most people a visit to South Africa tends to be in the middle of the European Winter, because of the attractions of blue sky and a much better temperature.

Naturally enough this is high season time in South Africa, and we should all know exactly what that means.
It of course means high prices, and crowds, two things that would put me right off.

Going to South Africa has to include at least a few days spent on Safari, so what does that mean in high season?
The first thing it means is a 40% hike in hotel room rates, and in the same vein, a substantial rise in air fares especially around the Christmas to New Year period.

In addition why don’t you consider the following thoughts:

If you want to fly from Europe to Cape Town, then fares drop sharply in mid August, and hotel rates stay low until September. It is true that the temperature in Cape Town over Christmas are around 25 degrees centigrade, and in August only 18 degrees. There is far more rain in August, but what are the advantages of a low season visit apart from the obvious financial one?

The first thing is, that you don’t hopefully go to South Africa to sit and vegetate on a beach, after all you can go to many other less interesting places and do that.

Tehre is more rain so in the Western Cape, The Namaqualand is in full bloom, just for a very short period of time.
It is a great time to go whale watching in Hermanus, and a wonderful time to visit Kruger Park, because this is when the animals congregate around water holes.

So in conclusion the best time to visit South Africa is not December/January, but August.

The North African country of Morocco is only a step away from Europe, across the confines of the straits of Gibraltar, but they are a world away in both its culture and experience. Due partly to its geographical situation, Morocco is to be found at the crossroads where the East merges into the West, Africa comes together with Southern Europe, and the Mediterranean merges with the Atlantic.

Positioned at the tip of Northwest of Africa and linked with two oceans, this country’s central interest for western travellers has nearly always been the hot climate; but also the quality of its crafts and its interesting and colourful nature, also draws in western travellers. In addition, in the last 10 years, western travellers are finding other unseen adventures, mostly in the more northern and central areas of Morocco such as in the Rif and High Atlas Mountains. Here it is even possible to enjoy a skiing holiday! With striking contrast down south, we still find many western travellers are drawn to delve into the gleaming sands of the Western Sahara, on camelback, horseback or 4X4.

Should you travel to Morocco for the beautiful weather, trek through the mountains or the burning desert sands, it is a sure bet you will also be delighted by the timeless Medieval medinas of the vibrant cities, this is particularly Marrakech, where the souks draw in travellers into a fascinating exotic culture. your overall recall will be one of sweet mint tea, brightly coloured material, and snake charmers weave their magic in the square.

Although most of its built-up areas are newly built, Morocco has many ancient monuments and fascinating buildings, representing a turbulent history created by its geographical position. Morocco in addition to her rich past, brought together with a hopeful and exciting present, makes Morocco a mystery tour of surprises and enthralment for thousands of visitors throughout the year.

Known as the “Queen of the Midlands”, Nottingham is located in the East Midlands of England and is a popular tourist destination, particularly for its connections to Robin Hood. Visiting Nottingham there is much to see, both across the city and within the county.

Of all the attractions to see in Nottingham, Sherwood Forest is one of the most popular attracting thousands of fans of the legendary Robin Hood every year. Located about twenty miles north, Sherwood Forest Country Park is easily accessible on a trip to Nottingham thanks to numerous public transport links and excellent road links along the A614.

Once in Sherwood Forest, it is worth checking into the visitor’s centre. There you will be able to get directions to and a little history about the ‘Major Oak’, the tree which according to legend and local belief, Robin Hood used to hide from his enemies.

For the major Robin Hood fans, a trip to Nottingham is not complete without visiting Nottingham’s most popular attraction, the ‘Tales of Robin Hood.’ Expect to step back in time to dark, medieval Britain and experience the life of one of Britain’s bravest outlaws.

Daytime tours and even medieval night-time banquets are a popular feature, as is archery, history quizzes and fantasy games and workshops.

Only two minutes from Nottingham’s most popular attraction lies another of the city’s popular sightseeing destinations, Nottingham Castle. Technically no longer a castle, Nottingham Castle is a beautiful seventeenth century mansion which has been built on the site of the original medieval castle.

Today the castle is a popular museum and art gallery, housing numerous visual art collections, silver, glass and artefacts that span Nottingham’s history. Only ten minutes walk from Nottingham city centre, Nottingham Castle is an ideal attraction to see on a visit to Nottingham, particularly when combined with the neighbouring Tales of Robin Hood attraction.

While famous for the legend of Robin Hood, there are other ‘non-Robin Hood’ attractions in Nottingham that are worth seeing, particularly the City of Caves. Just five minutes’ walk from Nottingham Train Station, the City of Caves is a popular family attraction that comprises of more than 400 caves, some dating back as far as the Dark Ages.

On a tour around the caves, it’s possible to see how they have been used throughout the centuries, as different generations sought refuge and shelter within them.

Of course, there are many more attractions to visit, ensuring you will be kept busy on your stay here. With so many attractions to see by day and by night so many restaurants, bars and hotels in Nottingham to savour, expect cultural, education days and relaxing, enjoyable evenings on your trip to Nottingham.

Many lovers see Italy as an idyllic getaway, perfect for helping their relationship blossom. With a romantic atmosphere, amazing food and great wine to enjoy by candlelight, all while being serenaded by street musicians, there’s no reason not to fall in love with Italy – or to share the experience with your loved one.

However, with so many fantastic cities and towns to choose from in Italy, it can be hard to decide on a romantic getaway destination. So why not go with one of the most classic choices, and travel to Rome with your partner this summer? Rome has so much to offer in terms of romantic sights and activities, you and your loved one are sure to come away with an experience to remember.

Any romantic getaway in Rome should begin with a leisurely stroll through the city, visiting some of the most beautiful sights. Among the most romantic are the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, Via Sacra, the Borghese Gardens and Piazza Navona – along with countless others. You also won’t want to miss out on an evening stroll along the Tiber River – another of Rome’s most quintessential romantic activities.

Of course, there are also various famous viewpoints across the city, perfect for lovers to experience together. Two of the most popular views of Rome are from Gianicolo hill – overlooking Trastevere, the Pantheon and the monument to Vittorio Emanuele in Piazza Venezia – as well as from the Pincio at the edge of the Borghese Gardens, where you’ll get a great view of the Vatican. Less known – but offering stunning views just the same – is the orange grove at Parco Savello on the Aventine Hill.

Once you and your partner have experienced some of the most beautiful sights and views in Rome, it’s time to plan some romantic activities. Why not join a wine-tasting tour, or perhaps take a cooking class together? Italy’s wine is undoubtedly one of the most romantic aspects of the country, so learning more about it as a couple is a great activity for your romantic getaway. Similarly, you can learn how to make some of those delicious Italian dishes you’ve tried on your getaway by participating in a cooking class!

Of course, there are many other romantic activities for you and your loved one to experience while in Rome. The Estate Romana Festival, for instance – on from late June through early September – offers various musical and cultural events such as jazz, classical music, film and theatre – making it an ideal couple’s activity. The White Night (Notte Bianca) festival, on the other hand – on in early to mid September – hosts various events such as music, dance, and theatre performances, while shops, museums and restaurants stay open late – a perfect setting for a romantic summer getaway!

Thankfully – particularly for those living in Europe – all of these attractions are only a few hours away. Rome flights are served by the city’s two main airports, Ciampino and Fiumicino, making holidays in Rome easily accessible for anyone looking to exploring the Eternal City.
