Physics problem that is driving me nuts, please help?
A student of weight 667 N rides a steadily rotating Ferris wheel (the student sits
upright). At the highest point, the magnitude of the normal force !N on the student
from the seat is 556 N. (a) What is the magnitude of !N at the lowest point? (b)
What is the magnitude N if the wheel’s speed is tripled?
I'm lost i don't know how to solve this problem without a given velocity, maybe im even more loss than i think
The Ferris wheel spins, so there is a centrifugal force on the person radially outwards. A the highest point, this force acts against the weight, reducing it from 667N to 556 N, So it has magnitude
667-556=111 N
This will act downwards at the lowest point, adding to the weight
So W= 667+ 111 = 776 N
Now we know that centrifugal force = mv^2 / r, So if velocity (v) triples, (all others remain constant), the centripetal force becomes 3^2 = 9 times.
= 999 N
Once at the top, the fellow may come down faster than he would like to.
