Does this tote bag count as a personal item [i.e. purse, backpack]?
It's a Rolling Stone Coldplay Tote Bag. I'm going on a trip tomorrow using AirTran and I'd like to know if this qualifies as a personal item.

Yes, anything you carry is technically a personal item. Tote bags, purses, sweaters, even a cane or crutches are considered a personal item. In my experience, nobody really cares if you have a sweater AND a bag or if you have crutches, but if you have a couple bags, they will ask you to check the extra bags. My advice is to put your purse, tote bag, and whatever else you want to carry on board in one larger bag that still meets the carry on size requirements. This way you won't get hassled, and it will also be easier for you to get around the airport.
If you're wondering if you can carry on a small suitcase AND this tote bag, then yes, that should be fine. I've carried on large messenger bags or backpacks and my suitcase.
